Substack is working better for me than Medium did, in terms of getting money every month. But it's hard to build a following on either of them if no one has any idea who you are, and there's no guarantee you'll be famous enough to earn money regularly on either of them.
Its more a case of ensorship and ownership. On Substack, even the five nazi accounts weren't censored. You can literally write what you like. Upset someone on Medium (and its only a matter of time), and you're booted out. I'm surprised I've lasted this long! And ownership...Medium are free to do what they like with your work.
Funnily enough, this breakdown makes me glad I'm putting more time into Substack than I was Medium. As a speculative fiction writer I want to build a dedicated fan base around my works and content. Not just become some other writing guru for a bunch of other writers.
What if I move to an extremely poor country where everything is very cheap. I can be a rich writer from Substack then? Maybe there is a workshop idea....
Hi Smillew, lovely to see you are here and I hope all is well. I keep trying to call the number to subscribe to your course but I get a man asking me if I will send him $10k so that he can send me $42.5m. Good luck with all your writing wherever you pen.
Ten years of routine publishing on Substack could work at the rate that folks grow subscribers hereβ¦but will Substack be around then or somehow sold and butchered? Like X?
One thing Substack doesn't seem to have have that Medium has is that coterie of inside haters. You can always get a lot of reads on Medium by going on about how much you hate Medium, how anyone who signs up to "Friend of Medium" is a pathetic sucker, etc etc etc. I just don't get it.
Hey, Smillew, this article convinced me to subscribe. I enjoy your excellent writing skills and fascinating adoration of amusing fakeness! Have faith in my promise to subscribe as soon as Iβm able to. In the meantime, I wish you to get rich as a writer!
The first rule of making money on Substack is to not lose money on Substack.
Stop paying $X/month for the course. That will make you $X/month richer.

Unless one just writes for fun, like me. My mother is my biggest (only?) fan. π

Nice breakdown. It's important to stay realistic here- even if we're dreaming big.
I've bought my lottery ticket. At least on Substack it's free. π
On a serious note, what would you say your time split between substack, medium and twitter is?
Does this mean you're giving up?
Loving the honesty, Smillew. Many thanks for the inside track.
Is it possible to do both?
I just try to write and show up for other people. It grows from there.
